I won’t go into the philosophical musings or argue whether or not it is tough. But I will give you a simple 5-part blueprint for learning how to design and develop Joomla websites in a week or less (depending on your time commitment and other factors.)
Learning how to design Joomla websites require:
1. Joomla Tutorials: This is what I call, “un grand maestro”-a great teacher. To learn and master Joomla, you need a set of Joomla tutorials that will take you by the hand and show you a step-by-step process for learning how to install Joomla; setup, configure, create and manage content sections, categories and pages; customize your Joomla templates and site and a whole lot more. Some people prefer to read. For these, a Joomla manual will be the right tool. But in the age of TV and Youtube, some Joomla tutorials (including mine) are a collection of video tutorials that you can watch and apply right away without the complications of having to decipher where this tab or that link is or what a certain technical term is.
If you find the right Joomla videos or manuals (whichever one you are more comfortable with), you have covered over 70% of the learning curve.
2. Domain Registration: The next thing to do now is to register or use an existing domain name to use as a practice site so that you can apply and not just imagine how to create Joomla websites. You should note here that you will need to create a Database to use for your Joomla installation, but you can only do this if the main site is yours. If you are using a free blog from blogspot or other similar ones, it is not possible. So, pull out your credit card or Paypal account and pay $10 or less for a domain name (valid for one year.)
3. Website Hosting: Once you get your domain name, you now need to buy website hosting for your Joomla site. There are many hosting providers out that offer you website hosting for less than $10 a month. With the hosting account, you will be able to create databases to use for installing Joomla as well as get enough disk space to store your templates, graphics, videos, audios and other files that you will be using to design your Joomla website.
In terms of tangible preparation for learning Joomla web design and development and mastering it, the above three are all that you need. However, there are two very important (though intangible, yet crucial) factors that you need to have to be an effective Joomla expert website developer.
4. Determination: Depending on how you decide to learn Joomla (especially if you are using manual or PDF guides), you may have to keep your determination very high. It may be challenging at first, but after a while you should find it more creative, more exciting, less frustrating and more fulfilling to work with the Joomla CMS (content management system). “Hang in there,” like they say, and you will be a better Joomla website designer for it.
5. Continuous Learning: I don’t mean that you will or should spend all the days of your life learning Joomla. But just as life is a continuous learning process, so is Joomla. You can frequent the Joomla forums, attend monthly meetings at your local JUG (Joomla User Group) or visit Joomla sites designed by other webmasters and see how you can or may emulate their systems. The whole point of the continuous learning system is to not forget what you have learned thus far about Joomla web design and development as well as to get and keep fresh ideas flowing into your mind and subconscious to keep you ahead of the pack and make you a better, skilled and more flexible Joomla expert website designer.
To be a good Joomla website designer, you need the best Joomla tutorials, a site to practice on, a hosting account to store your files and templates, a strong determination to hang in there and a passionate drive to continuously learn and update yourself and more.
