One of the best things about designing your websites using the Joomla CMS is the wealth of tools and options available for you to boost your Joomla SEO (search engine optimization) ranking as much as you want (and work towards.)
Without much ado, here are a few tips on how to best optimize your website for the search engines and get more website traffic than you would normally have using any other web designing software or platform. Please, note that this is the first of a 3-part series on Joomla SEO. You can find the others at the site below???
To better optimize your Joomla website and getting a stampede of targeted website traffic, please, follow these Joomla SEO tips:
- Setup Joomla SEF URLs: Setting up a Joomla SEF (search engine friendly) URLs is one of the best ways of getting your website to show up at the top of the search engine results when searched. There are two ways to do this:
1. You can login to the admin area and click open the “Global Configuration” tab. Here, you should set both the “search engine friendly URLs” and “Apache mod_rewrite” options to ‘yes’. You should only do this AFTER you login to your hosting account’s “Control Panel” and (once you open up the “File Manager” section)and rename the “htaccess.txt” file to “.htaccess”
2. Install Joomla SEF Extension: The second option is to go to Joomla.org and download a Joomla SEF extension from the “Joomla Extensions Directory” under the Site Management/SEO sub-directory. You should then install and configure it on your Joomla website.
Irrespective of which path you take, you should now have Joomla SEF URLs that look like myownlittlesite.com/my-jamaican-trip and not some random combo of incomprehensible strings of numbers, letters and symbols that is the default Joomla URL type.
- Basic On-site SEO: Joomla is setup in a way that it is very easy to optimize your website for the search engines. One of the options you have here is to setup <H1> tags, embolden and italicize texts accordingly to conform with basic search engine optimization guidelines. Once you set this up properly, you Joomla website should have a better chance of ranking highly on the search engines and getting more traffic from them than the average “me-too” site that you will find online.
- Joomla Metadata Settings: This is where you setup the general SEO system for your Joomla website. This should be one of the first things that you setup when you launch your site and most carefully done aspects of your Joomla site development. To access this, login to the admin backend, open the “Global Configuration” area and go to the “Metadata Settings” section. Here, you should provide the keywords and meta descriptions of your website. Then, select the buttons to show both the title and site META tags.
Note that the information in your Metadata settings is what the search engines will use to index your site, so make sure you have the right information in there.
There are also other ways to take advantage of the Joomla SEO system and get your site ranked higher and get more targeted traffic.
