Joomla SEO (search engine optimization) is like manna from heaven for Joomla web designers. It is simple to setup , easy to manage and yields a lot of traffic and backlinks, if done properly. Here, will take a look at how you can easily setup Joomla SEF (search engine friendly) URLs for your website to get the favor of the both the SE bots and your potential website visitors and customers.
Here is how to go about it the smart way!
Customizing your site by setting up Joomla SEF is better than killing two birds with a stone. It is more like killing three with one stone. :) Here, I am referring to setting up search engine friendly (SEF, for short) URL’s for your Joomla website. The traditional Joomla website URL’s look something like: www.joomlasultan.com/option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=25&Itemid=27 . Now, while that’s not bad (for somebody who doesn’t know the implications, that is!), what stops you from having URLS like www.mywebsite.com/how-to-be-a-cool-dude . Aint that cool? ;)
Well, it’s for two reasons:
i. It is easier for your potential website visitor to read and recognize as something they want to read about or explore further. This will make your site stand out from the others on the search engine results pages and get you more clicks than even the number 1 ranked site, if you do your job well.
ii. Having Joomla SEF URL’s also helps you rank better on the search engines for the keyword(s) that is/are in the customized URL. In other words, if you were trying to rank for the keyword phrase, “How to be Cool”, the above URL type will get you better ranking than a bunch of strings of machine codes that nobody wants or can read. If this doesn’t make sense, please, do feel free to contact me for more detailed info on the significance of modifying Joomla URL’s to help you get (and keep) better rankings, and I will be more than happy to help out. You can easily and simply setup Joomla SEF (search engine friendly) URLs for your website in two this in either one of two ways:
1. You can install a Joomla extension (addon script) that are especially made to help you create these SEF URLs as well as help you to automatically generate a sitemap (with a list of all the URL on your site) that you can submit to the search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc.
Now, I must warn you. Some scripts rock, while others suck. But you can always visit the “Joomla Extensions Directory”, look in the right category (Site Management/SEF) and take a careful look at the reviews of others who may have used these tools. You can then decide on your own which one does the job and which just “clogs your sink” and makes your website nightmares even worse and gross.
Once you find a good Joomla SEF extension that you look, simply follow the instructions to download, upload, install and setup the little thing to let it start doing its job of making sure that your Joomla website is even in a better shape to woo the search engines and humans!
2. Manual Joomla SEF Configuration: I usually don’t like installing SEF extensions because I don’t fancy some of the functions that some do and I almost had an issue (a BIG ONE!) with one of the extensions that I installed on my Joomla website sometime ago. If you feel the same or are a control freak like me who wants to oversee (and dictate) how the whole thing goes, then you can up to configure your Joomla site to have SEF URL’s directly from the “Configurations” tab of the admin area (backend) of your Joomla website. Since the steps involved are much easier to grasp visually than reading, I have created a video tutorial detailing how to go about this step by step on my website, if you are interested in the details. It’s simple, just a little complicated to learn by reading than by watching, which was why I opted for the path least painful. J
