One of the best things about designing and developing a website is the expectations that you will rank highly in the search engines and get a lot of targeted website traffic. But this is not always the case….for most people. Here are a few Joomla SEO tips that may help you get better search engine placements and more targeted traffic for your Joomla website.

  • Content Alias: When you create a content section or category in Joomla, one of the customization options that you have is to give the section or category an ‘alias’. This alias ends up being the name of the URL of that particular section or category. Thus, if you have a “Vacation Homes” section and you choose ‘beach-houses’ as the alias, your site URL will look like: mysite.com/beach-houses. In the event that you don’t choose an alias, Joomla will automatically parse the name of the section as the URL. Thus, in this example, if you hadn’t chosen an alias, the URL will automatically become: mysite.com/vacation-homes.

Note that if you have the right keyword URL, you will rank higher in the search engines and are more feasible and more likely to get clicks from browsers who will recognize your URL as having the information that they are looking for.

  • Activate Feed Links: When creating a Joomla menu to link to any section or category on your website, you are also given the option of whether to create an RSS feed link for that menu item or not. To activate this, just open the “Parameters(Advanced)” area and select “yes” where it says, “Show Feed link”. You can create an RSS feed for every content section and category by following this process for each one. Since some people would prefer to subscribe to your RSS feeds to be updated whenever you post new content, you are also simultaneously expanding your user base when you make this option available.

  • Submit RSS Feeds: Now, since your homepage, content sections and content categories all have RSS feeds, you can take this a little further. Just submit each one of them to the RSS directories. This will boost your Joomla SEO efforts in 4 ways: more one-way backlinks to your website, higher rankings, more traffic and possibly more RSS feed subscribers. Now, talk about killing four birds with a stone! Who wants two when you can get four instead? Smile
If you all you want is to leverage your Joomla SEO efforts for higher search engine rankings, more targeted traffic and site credibility, these tips should be invaluable.
